What’s this about?” He explained that my mother had called the department the night before, deeply distressed, reporting that her daughter had “stormed off” and might be “a danger to herself.” My heart pounded. I had walked out of a dinner. I had driven straight home and gone to bed. But somewhere in the retelling, my family had turned my quiet exit into an emergency, and I could not tell whether it was genuine worry or something colder.<\/p>\n
“Ma’am,” the officer continued, “your mother also mentioned that you’re the primary caregiver for the grandchildren and that she was concerned about your, and I’m quoting her, ‘sudden refusal to help the family.'” I closed my eyes. There it was. Not concern for me at all. A performance, wrapped in the language of worry, designed to pull me back into the role I’d finally refused the night before.
