Rebecca moved fast, exactly as I’d trained her to over nine years. Within minutes, the owner’s villa was locked, the complimentary amenities were revoked, and a printed folio for the family’s entire stay, four nights at full rack rate across two suites, the spa, the poolside charges, all of it, was waiting at the front desk. I stood beside the reception counter in my cream linen suit and simply waited for my son and his wife to come down.<\/p>\n
Crystal arrived first, fresh from the spa, sunglasses pushed up into her hair, already complaining that her room key had stopped working. “There’s some mistake,” she snapped at Rebecca. “We’re comped. Talk to the owner.” Rebecca, calm as still water, said, “I did. She’s standing right there.” Crystal turned, saw me, and laughed the same dismissive laugh from the lobby the day before. “Her? She’s the nanny.” That was when I stepped forward, and for the first time all trip, I did not lower my voice. “Actually,” I said, “I’m the woman whose name is on the deed to this resort, and on the fourteen others my grandchildren just heard about. And you, Crystal, are about to learn exactly who you’ve been calling ‘the help.'”<\/p>\n
