Ryan didn’t answer the officer. He looked at his shoes, then at his mother, and the silence stretched long enough that Denise’s confident expression began to waver. So I answered for him. “Officer Delgado, I own this house. It’s titled solely in my name. I bought it before we were married, with my own money, and my husband is not on the deed.” Denise’s head snapped toward me. “That’s not true,” she said. “Ryan provides for this family.” I kept my eyes on the officer. “I have the deed, the mortgage statements, and my property tax records inside.
