My phone rang while I was unpacking the last box in my new apartment. It was not my father’s number. It was the Calder Hotels vice president, the man who had handed me his card twenty feet from a demonstration my family had credited to my brother. “This is Grant Whitmore from Calder,” he said. “I’m standing in your father’s showroom, and nothing works. Your name is on every panel and on the proposal as director of integrated controls. So I’ll ask you directly. Are you the person who actually built this system?”<\/p>\n
I sat down on the edge of my new bed in the Highlands, the morning light coming through windows that belonged to no one but me. “Yes,” I said. “Everything you saw work last week was mine.
