The mug slipped from Caleb’s hand the moment he saw the faded shipping label. Fifteen years after we left Apartment 3B, a battered parcel addressed to my husband had landed in a seventy-nine-dollar box of unclaimed packages we bought for fun. Until then our Friday night had been avocado socks, glittery phone cases, and useless gadgets. We had laughed like children. When I lifted that last package, every trace of amusement left his face. He crossed the room and begged me not to touch it. After nearly seventeen years together, I had never seen him so frightened.

Caleb would not explain, so I locked myself in the bathroom and tore through the yellowed tape. Beneath brown tissue paper sat a pair of carefully repaired black dress shoes. They were creased, worn at the toes, and older than our marriage. When I opened the door he was sitting against the hallway wall. He admitted the shoes were his—and that they belonged to four months of our marriage built on a lie.

He drove me to our old neighborhood and stopped beside a weathered bus shelter. Three months after our wedding his job had been eliminated, but he kept dressing for work every morning. For nearly four months he spent his days at the library, employment offices, and interviews while I believed we were both earning money. We had once been down to twelve dollars. He skipped lunch rather than frighten me about rent or insurance. The shoes split before an interview. Martin, a local repairman, fixed them without immediate payment. After Caleb found work he paid the bill and arranged to have the shoes shipped home so he could confess on our anniversary. The parcel vanished after we moved, and he let that disappearance become another excuse. There was no court case and no hidden fortune. There was only fear, and a husband too ashamed to say he needed help.

On the walk back I told him I would have worried, but I would have worried beside him. After a long silence he confessed that his current department was facing another round of possible cuts. This time he showed me the email instead of hiding it. Nothing had been decided, and neither of us pretended otherwise. Outside a diner he put on the restored shoes, took three uncomfortable steps, and laughed because they hurt. Fifteen years earlier those shoes had carried him through a crisis alone. That night he finally let me walk beside him.
