Trevor sank into the chair across from me and opened the folder. Inside were two things. The first was a printout of everything I had tracked over those five days, every feeding, every diaper, every hour I had gone without sleep, laid out plainly so he could see exactly what “acting like a mother” had actually required while he was casting lines into a lake. The second was harder for him to look at. It was the contact information for a family therapist, and beneath it, a short letter I had written.<\/p>\n
“I’m not leaving you,” I said, watching his face. “The suitcases are for me and the girls to stay at my sister’s for two weeks. Not forever. Just long enough for you to understand something.” He started to speak, but I raised a hand. “When you said I wanted to be a mother so I should act like one, you forgot that you wanted to be a father too. These babies have two parents. I did every single thing on that list alone, and I did it well, but I am done doing it while you decide parenting is optional.”<\/p>\n
He was quiet for a long time. Then, to my surprise, his eyes filled. He told me he had spent the whole trip feeling hollow, that his friends had asked why he wasn’t home with his newborns, that he had known halfway through the first day he had made a terrible mistake but had been too proud to admit it. He said he had rehearsed an apology the entire drive back and still hadn’t felt it was enough.<\/p>\n
I let him hold both girls that night while I finally slept for six uninterrupted hours, the first real rest I’d had in half a year.
