The woman in the blazer was named Patrice, and she was the mother of another bride, a girl whose original venue had fallen through and who had been on the Rosewood Inn’s waiting list for that exact sunset terrace. When my cancellation freed the date, Diane had thought of her immediately. Patrice had driven straight over with a signed offer and a deposit check of her own, and she wanted to thank me in person for making the date available. The money was never the gift, Mason. The welcome was. You gave mine away first.”<\/p>\n
Mason began to cry then, the way he had cried as a boy at my kitchen table. He asked Kaitlyn to give us a minute, and to her credit, or perhaps just her shock, she went to the car. He sat across from me, turned no cups in circles, and looked me in the eye for the first time in months. He apologized, not for the money, but for the silence, which was the only apology I had ever wanted. I told him I would always love him. I also told him that love without respect is just a pajama drawer no one uses anymore.<\/p>\n

The twelve thousand dollars went where Harold would have wanted it, into a college fund for the great-grandchild who arrived two years later, a little boy who now keeps a drawer of pajamas at my house.
