On the napkin she had written: He is married. Check the messages. The phone was not locked. The open thread was between him and a woman named Elise. Photos of a little boy. Plans for after \u201cthis thing tonight.\u201d A message sent twenty minutes earlier: She thinks this is a date. I\u2019ll be home by eleven.<\/p>\n
I sat there with the tub in my lap while the previews rolled. He smiled and reached for the popcorn. I stood up, took the tub, and walked out without explaining. In the lobby the same girl was wiping the counter. I set the phone and the napkin in front of her. \u201cThank you,\u201d I said. She only nodded, as if she had done this before and hoped she would not have to do it again.<\/p>\n
I blocked his number in the parking lot. The next morning Elise called from a number I did not recognize. The concession girl had forwarded her my description so she would know the truth had finally reached someone else. We did not become friends. We did not need to. We only needed the same fact: a man who buys two tickets is not always buying a future. Sometimes he is only buying an hour he never planned to pay for.
