“Maybe if you weren’t so controlling, Marcus wouldn’t have to sneak around you,” Vanessa snapped, standing up fast enough to rattle the table. “This is exactly why he never wants to come here.” The words hung in the air. I watched my son’s face, waiting to see if he would finally say something, anything, to defend the mother who had raised him. He opened his mouth. Then he closed it. He looked down at the tongs still in his hand, and in that silence I understood something I had been avoiding for two years.<\/p>\n
But then Frank spoke, and his voice was steady in the way it only got when he had reached the end of his patience. “Marcus,” he said, “your mother asked you a question with her whole face, and you couldn’t look at her. I think it’s time you decided whose son you are.” The whole patio held its breath. And something in my husband’s plain words seemed to reach Marcus where mine could not. He set the tongs down. He began, slowly, to take the meat back out of the containers.<\/p>\n
Vanessa stared at him in disbelief. “What are you doing?” He did not answer her right away. He emptied both totes, stacked the containers, and set them back in the bags they came in. Then he looked at his wife and said, quietly, “She’s my mother. We don’t take from her. We don’t insult her house. If you can’t sit at this table without doing that, then we shouldn’t be at it.” Diane gasped. Vanessa grabbed her purse and walked out, and after a long moment, Diane followed, leaving the empty bags behind on the patio.<\/p>\n
Marcus stayed. He helped Kayla and Renee clear the plates, and when the others had gone home, he sat with Frank and me at the long wooden table in the fading light and apologized for two years of looking away. It did not fix everything in one afternoon. His marriage strained under the weight of that day, and I will not pretend I was sorry to see him set a boundary that was long overdue.
