She was born nine months ago, and you were invited to the hospital, the announcement, and the christening.” I lifted Sofia gently so everyone could see her lace-trimmed dress. “You never came. And I spent months thinking you simply didn’t care.” My father’s smile collapsed into confusion, the champagne still catching the summer light in his raised hand. “That’s not possible,” he said. “I never got anything.
