In the back corner, behind a false panel of shelving Trevor had built to look like storage, was a second workbench I had never known existed. And covering the wall above it were photographs. Not of another woman, which was my first sick fear. They were surveillance photographs. Of me. Dozens of them, stretching back years, timestamped, showing me leaving the house with my cane, sitting on our porch, being guided into cars, walking with the physical therapist who used to visit. Beside the photos were folders, a ledger, and a stack of documents in plastic sleeves. My trembling hands reached for the nearest folder, and the moment I read the first page, the room tilted.<\/p>\n
They were financial documents. Insurance paperwork. And every one of them was built around my blindness. Trevor had taken out policies I never knew about, filed claims I never authorized, and, according to the ledger, had been collecting disability and care-related payments in my name for years, funneling them into an account I had never seen. My blindness had not made me a burden he lovingly carried. It had made me a business. I was still standing there, a photograph of my own face in one hand and a fraudulent claim form in the other, when I heard the garage door open behind me and Trevor’s voice, home a day early, say, “You’re not supposed to be in here.”<\/p>\n
