My son sat down slowly, the way a man sits when the ground he assumed was solid has started to move. I opened the folder and turned the first page toward him. It was a single sheet, a running total I had tallied at midnight, of every transfer, every “just this once,” every recurring charge he had left running on accounts that carried my name. The number at the bottom was underlined twice. He looked at it and his mouth opened, but nothing came out. Because the number was far larger than he had ever let himself add up, and seeing it written down, in his mother’s careful handwriting, made it impossible to pretend it had been small.<\/p>\n
“That’s over four years, Brandon,” I said quietly. “The library pays me nothing. Your father’s pension only stretches so far. And every month, a little more of it went to a son who couldn’t find one Sunday for dinner.” He started to explain, the way he always did, the careful voice, the someone-nearby caution I had grown to recognize even over the phone. But this time no one was nearby. It was just the two of us at the table where I had signed his permission slips. And that was when he finally said the thing that told me everything I needed to know about why he had really driven over that morning, pale and shaking. “Mom, I need you to reopen the accounts today. There’s a payment coming out tomorrow that I can’t cover.”<\/p>\n
