I stood slowly, set down my ordinary wine, and let the bride lead me by the hand through a sea of turned heads. Her name was Mira, and until that moment my father’s guests had no idea who she truly was to me. She guided me up onto the low stage beside Theo, then lifted the microphone again and looked out over the crowd of magazine covers and business rankings my father had spent his life impressing. “Nine years ago,” she said, “I was eighteen, sleeping in a shelter, about to age out of the system with nothing. A woman ran a free evening program teaching trades to girls like me. She paid my tuition out of her own pocket.
