“Rosa,” the old man whispered, tears already running into the lines of his face. “Rosa Bellini. It’s you. After sixty years, it’s really you.” My mother’s cane hit the floor with a clatter, and her free hand flew to her mouth. “Enzo?” she breathed. The dining room had gone so quiet you could hear the ice settling in someone’s water glass. The hostess stood behind her stand, her cruel little smile completely gone, her face draining of color as she watched the owner of the restaurant kneeling at the feet of the “cheap” old woman she had just tried to throw out.<\/p>\n
I stood frozen, holding my mother’s arm, watching a piece of her life I had never known unfold in the middle of a bistro. Enzo pressed her hand to his forehead like something holy. “I looked for you,” he said. “When you left for America, I went to your village and they said you were gone, and no one would tell me where. I never stopped wondering.” My mother was crying now, too, sixty years falling away from her face. “They didn’t approve of you,” she said softly. “My family. That’s why I never wrote. I thought you’d forgotten me long ago.” Enzo shook his head fiercely. “I named this restaurant after the street where we met,” he said. “Via Speranza. Every plate I’ve cooked for forty years, I cooked remembering you.”<\/p>\n
