At ten minutes to nine, I rang the bell, and the door swung open exactly the way I had dreamed it, my son Daniel standing there with the gravy boat in his hands, his face collapsing from holiday cheer into pure confusion. “Mom?” Behind him, the full house went quiet one fork at a time, just as I had known it would.
