For one long moment, standing there with Grayson’s Mercedes key warm in my palm, I imagined it, the scratch down the door, the snapped emblem, giving them back exactly what they had given me. Then I understood that would make me the villain in the story they were already writing. So I set the key back in the bowl. Because I had realized something better. My insurance appraiser is coming Tuesday to document the loss, and my attorney will send you the paperwork. Since you instructed a minor to test my property until it broke, and admitted it in front of six witnesses, we can do this the simple way, or the expensive way.” The laughter stopped.<\/p>\n
