You turned my life’s work into a science experiment to make yourself feel superior, and now you’re going to pay for it, the way adults do.” My mother started her soft, tired peace-making voice, and I stopped her with one sentence. “Mom, every person in this room just told me an eight, sorry, a twelve-thousand-dollar instrument was ‘just a guitar’ I could ‘buy another one’ of. So I’m going to buy another one. With Grayson’s money.”<\/p>\n

He paid. It took a demand letter and the very real threat of court, but he paid.<\/p>\n
I bought another Hummingbird with that money, a good one, and I keep it in a case my nephew will never get his hands on. My family did not speak to me for a while, convinced I had chosen a guitar over blood. But something shifted, too. The next time we gathered, Grayson kept his opinions about what was “real” to himself. Mason, notably, was made to apologize by his own father, once the checkbook was involved, funny how that works. I never scratched the Mercedes. I never had to. I simply refused, for the first time in my life, to be the one who paid for other people’s contempt.
