Why would we need that?” I kept my voice light. “Because I want to protect us both. If your mother ever claims I abandoned the house, or that I don’t belong here, we’ll have a clear record that I left at your request, temporarily.” He thought about it for exactly three seconds, too relieved to be rid of me to sense the trap, and agreed. He even wrote it himself, in his own handwriting, dated and signed. He had no idea what he had just handed me.<\/p>\n
