It was an envelope, thick and slightly damp at one corner, with my name written across the front in careful, old-fashioned handwriting. Inside was a folded letter and, tucked behind it, a check. My hands were shaking so badly I had to read the number three times before I trusted it. Fifty thousand dollars. I sat down right there on the wet porch step with the coffee going cold beside me, certain there had been some mistake. Then I unfolded the letter, and the first line undid me. “Dear Eleanor,” it began. “Last night you saw an old man and not a beggar, and you cannot know what that meant to me.” I pressed my hand to my mouth. He wrote that he had tested a great many people over the past year, and that almost no one had opened their door. He signed it with a name I did not recognize, followed by a single sentence that made my heart stop. “Come to the address below at noon, and bring your daughter.
