I told them both to sit down at the kitchen table, the same table Rosalind had criticized a hundred times. “I paid the last three years of that mortgage almost entirely on my own,” I said to Damien. “You stayed home with the kids, which mattered, and I never resented it. But your mother has spent those same three years telling me I don’t know how to keep my own house, and last night she stood in my dining room and announced she was going to make it hers. And you smiled.” He started to speak, but I raised my hand. “I’m not finished.”<\/p>\n
