“I sold it,” I said. The silence that fell over that table was the most honest thing that had happened all evening. Rebecca’s smile froze. Steven’s fork stopped halfway to his mouth. Vanessa’s wine glass paused in the air. “It closes in three weeks,” I continued calmly. “A lovely young couple, expecting their first baby. They paid over a million dollars. The FOR SALE sign has been in my yard for two weeks. You would have seen it, if any of you had come by. But of course, none of you did.” Nathan found his voice first, sputtering that I couldn’t do that, that it was the family home, that it was supposed to stay in the family. I looked at him and said, quietly, “It’s not your house. It never was. It was mine and your father’s, and now it’s mine to do with as I choose.”<\/p>\n
Then I told them what I had overheard, because they deserved to know exactly why the warmth had curdled in me for good. I repeated Vanessa’s words back to her, in front of everyone, in front of the grandchildren, in the same light and careless tone she had used. She’s old. Eventually she’ll die and we’ll get the house anyway. Why waste time pretending to care? Vanessa’s face drained white. Steven turned to stare at his wife, and I understood in that moment that he had never expected me to hear it, but he had certainly said it too, because she had told me so between the canned vegetables. “You weren’t waiting to love me again,” I said. “You were waiting for me to die. So I decided to stop making that convenient for you.”<\/p>\n
The dinner ended the way you would expect. Accusations, then pleading, then Rebecca crying that I was tearing the family apart, as though I had been the one to skip the birthdays and the Thanksgiving and cash the Christmas checks without a word. I gathered my coat calmly. Before I left, I told them the rest, because I wanted no confusion and no false hope. The proceeds from the house, along with the remainder of my savings, had been placed into a trust. My seven grandchildren would each receive an education fund, protected, that their parents could never touch. The rest would fund my own comfortable years, and whatever remained would go to a foundation for widows facing what I had faced. Not one dollar would pass through the hands of the three people who had been counting the days until my funeral.<\/p>\n
I moved into a bright condominium near the water, one floor, no stairs, no rooms haunted by people waiting for me to vacate them. I made friends there, real ones, women my age who called just to talk.
