It was shock, then confusion, then the low murmur of a room trying to understand why the woman on the groom’s arm was walking down the aisle in a striped clown costume and white heels, red nose in her closed fist, chin lifted, tears nowhere in sight. Vivienne sat in the front row in champagne silk, and I watched her satisfied little smile bloom, certain her performance had worked, certain I was about to shatter in front of everyone she wanted to impress.
