Saturday at noon, a caravan of cars followed Gloria’s GPS out of the cramped neighborhood, past the Section 8 flyer’s address, and kept going. The route did not turn toward the East Side slums. It climbed. Past manicured medians, through a gated entrance where a guard checked names against a list, and up a private drive lined with oak trees. The laughter that had filled those cars, the jokes about my “palace,” died one relative at a time as the house came into view. Not an apartment. A house. Modern, glass-fronted, sitting on a landscaped hill with a circular drive.<\/p>\n
Gloria climbed out of her car, still clutching the crumpled flyer she’d brought to wave in my face, and stared up at the address I had given her, the one that matched the coordinates exactly. I stood in the open doorway in a simple dress, that same cold smile on my face. “Welcome, Gloria,” I said. “You brought the whole family, just like you promised. Come see the palace.” Fifty relatives stood frozen on the drive, speechless, and Ryan, beside his mother, looked as stunned as everyone else. Because Ryan didn’t know either.
