Sharon came down the stairs fast, launching into the speech I had heard a hundred times, about generosity and gratitude and how ungrateful I was after everything they’d done. Dad let her finish. Then he asked one question, evenly. “Whose name is on the auto loan?” Sharon faltered. “It’s in Trevor’s name,” she said. “No,” Dad replied, “the registration might list Trevor. The loan, the debt, the payments, those are Bethany’s. I’ve seen the paperwork she keeps. You’ve been withholding a vehicle my daughter is legally obligated to pay for. That’s not generosity. In some readings, that’s theft of use.”<\/p>\n
Trevor appeared in the doorway then, sheepish, saying my name like a question. But my father wasn’t finished, and for the first time I let him keep going instead of shrinking. He told Sharon plainly that I would be taking the keys to the car I paid for, that I would be gathering my and Mason’s things, and that we would be leaving with him that night. When Sharon started to argue that I couldn’t just walk out, Dad said the quiet thing that ended it. “She can. She has somewhere to go. She always did. We packed what we could fit in the truck in under an hour. Sharon alternated between shouting and crying, calling me ungrateful, then calling me family, then calling me ungrateful again, unable to decide which would work. Sharon still tells relatives I abandoned her son and stole “her” car, and I have stopped needing anyone to believe otherwise. My father was right that day on the road. I was never as trapped as they wanted me to believe.
