Brandon came over that same night, still in his party clothes. He sat at my kitchen table where he’d done homework as a boy, and I put the blanket in his hands and let him find the pocket himself. He read his father’s letter twice. Warren had written about waiting his whole life to be a grandfather, about hoping the baby would grow up knowing they were wanted before they ever arrived, about the sailboats because he’d always meant to take the child sailing the way he never got the chance to take Brandon. My son pressed the letter to his face and wept the way people do when grief and love arrive at the same door.<\/p>\n
Then he grew quiet, and I saw something settle in him that had not been there in years. “She recorded it,” he said. “She put it online. But I did tell him one thing Warren used to say. That how a person treats what you make with your hands is how they will treat everything you cannot see them handling.
