It was a wooden box, sanded smooth and stained dark, with brass hinges Victor had scavenged from an old cabinet. On the lid he had carved my name, and beneath it, my grandfather’s name, the man who taught Victor woodworking before he passed, the grandfather I never had. Inside, lined in felt, was every ticket stub from every game he came to. The bench season included. He had kept them for two years without me knowing. Under the stubs was a folded piece of paper, and I read it out loud, because my father had wanted an audience and now he was going to get one.<\/p>\n
It was a printout of the college account. Not the balance, which wasn’t much, but the record of every deposit. Twenty dollars here. Fifteen there. One month, four dollars. Two years of a man giving me whatever was left after supporting two kids who weren’t mine and one who was, never once mentioning it, never once making me feel like the reason money was tight. At the bottom Victor had written, in his blocky handwriting, “It’s not a lot. But it’s everything that was left, every time. Happy 18th, son.” He’d called me son too. The difference was he’d earned the word.<\/p>\n
I turned to my father and handed the keys back to him, still warm from his palm. I told him he couldn’t outshine fifteen years with a bow, that a car bought to humiliate the man who raised me wasn’t a gift, it was a bill he wanted me to feel grateful for. I told him Victor never once said “compete,” because Victor was never competing. He just showed up, every single day, while my father was learning how to make an entrance. My father’s face went red, then blank. He got in the new car alone and backed out of the driveway, and none of us watched him go.<\/p>\n
Victor stood there holding the wooden box I pushed back into his hands, looking like he didn’t know what to do with any of it. So I hugged him, right there in the driveway, the first time I’d ever done it without an occasion. I told him he’d already won the only thing worth winning years ago, and that he could stop looking at the ground now. We went inside and ate the breakfast Mom had made, the five of us, on the money for three, and it was the richest I have ever felt. My biological father gave me a car I never drove. My stepdad gave me a box I’ll keep the rest of my life. That was the day I stopped calling him my stepdad. He’s just my dad now.
