The three excuses Doug gave for not repaying it. And beneath that, in Hank’s careful print, the current value of a fully restored 1967 Mustang fastback, which my husband had researched himself before the stroke, so that no “guy who knows a guy” could ever cheat his grandson out of what the car was truly worth. Doug had come to that unit to prove I could not handle ninety-four dollars a month. Instead, Hank reached out from four years past and proved exactly who could not be trusted with money.<\/p>\n
Karen was crying now, but not the gentle way she had used at my kitchen table. She looked at the folder still tucked under Doug’s arm, the one labeled “financial oversight,” and she took it out of his hands. “You told me she was losing it,” Karen said to him. “You told me we needed to step in. And the whole time, you knew about this loan. You knew what the car was, didn’t you? That’s why you were in such a hurry to clear the garage.” Doug did not answer. A man who lies that easily, as I said, does half your work for you.<\/p>\n
I did the only thing left to do. I told Doug, plainly, in front of my daughter and my grandson, that there would be no financial oversight, no folder, no managing my money going forward. I told him the twenty-six thousand dollars was between him and his conscience and Hank’s ledger, which I would be keeping. And I told him that the Mustang belonged to Owen, free and clear, on his twenty-first birthday in June, exactly as my husband wanted, with no family discount and no helpful guy who knew a guy.<\/p>\n
Owen turns twenty-one next month. The title is already in his name, signed and notarized, waiting. He and Whitey Dunn have been going out to Unit 44 on Saturdays, learning how she runs, and I go along with my thermos and sit in the passenger seat where I always sat. Doug does not come to dinners much anymore, which suits everyone. Karen apologized to me, and I forgave her, because families are supposed to, and because she was fooled by a practiced liar the same way I nearly let myself be pushed around by one.
