What I had done was simple, and legal, and final. The venue, Riverside Gardens, had been paid in full, but the honeymoon, the one Trevor had assured everyone I was “handling,” had never been booked, because I had never agreed to it in writing and no one had bothered to confirm before assuming. So there was nothing to cancel. There was only a transfer that would now never happen. Every other payment was already made and non-refundable, which meant Bethany would still have her dream wedding in the glass conservatory beneath the wisteria. She just would not have the two-week honeymoon in the overwater villa she and Trevor had picked out and expected me to fund without ever inviting me to the table.<\/p>\n
I explained it to her plainly, because she deserved honesty more than she deserved comfort. I was not canceling her wedding. I was not making a scene. I was simply declining to pay for one more thing while being treated as a checkbook instead of a father. If Aunt Colleen and Trevor’s father were family enough to walk her down the aisle, then perhaps they were family enough to pay for the honeymoon. I had said yes to everything her mother would have wanted. But Rosalind would never, not once, have wanted our daughter to push me out of the ceremony and then call me a week later only to ask for more money. That was the line.
