I unfolded the first page and turned it toward her. It was the deed to the house, and the name printed on it was mine. Not Preston’s. Not Corinne’s. Mine. “This house,” I said quietly, “was never yours to redecorate, and it was never Preston’s to give you. Walter and I bought it outright fifteen years ago. When you two married and needed a place to live, I let you move in. I never signed it over.
