I did not shout, and I did not gloat. I simply explained the situation so plainly that no one could pretend to misunderstand it later. The house was legally mine. I had bought it for my mother and father to live in for the rest of their lives, in peace, without rent or worry. It was not a shared family asset, not a starter home for my brother and Camille, and certainly not a venue to be redecorated and reassigned while the actual residents ate off paper plates in the hallway. Anyone treating it otherwise had made an assumption, and assumptions, I said, do not appear on a deed.<\/p>\n
Then I turned to my parents, who were still tucked into their corners as though they needed permission to exist in their own home. I walked my mother off the loveseat and my father out of the hallway and sat them both down at the head of the table, where they should have been the entire time. I told the guests, warmly but firmly, that the party was over, and that the catering team could pack up whenever they were ready. Camille tried one last angle, her voice turning soft and wounded, reminding me she was carrying my brother’s child and asking how I could do this to a growing family. I told her I was not doing anything to her family. I was protecting mine.<\/p>\n
My brother followed me onto the porch afterward, away from the deflating balloons, and for the first time he spoke without Camille standing behind him. He admitted she had planned the whole thing, the party, the cleared-out sewing room, the boxes, the closet. He admitted he had gone along with it because it was easier than arguing. I told him the truth he needed to hear. Our parents had spent their whole lives making room for everyone else, and I had bought that house so that, just once, room would be made for them. If he wanted to be part of their lives, he was always welcome as a son and a guest. But he would never again be welcome as someone trying to move them into a corner.<\/p>\n
Camille and my brother left that evening with their trays and their diaper cake and their friends. My parents and I cleaned up the last of the streamers together, and then we finally opened the champagne I’d brought, the three of us, in the bright green sunroom my mother had always secretly loved. She cried a little, not from sadness this time, and my father kept touching the hardwood floors like he was only now allowing himself to believe they were his. I put the deed back in my bag, but I made copies for both of them to keep in a drawer, so that no one, ever again, could walk into their home and tell them they were in the way.
