I ended the call and set the phone beside Deborah’s groceries. Then I explained to Colby exactly what he had failed to grasp. The house was legally mine and his mother’s, paid off in full, with no mortgage and no written promise of inheritance anywhere. Changing a keypad code transferred nothing. Locking his own mother outside the gate with her heart medication in a paper bag was not planning ahead. It was, at the very least, harassment against the two people whose names appeared on every document that mattered.
