I pulled on my boots and stepped onto the porch just as the noise reached its peak. A cement truck sat idling at my grandfather’s iron gate, and beside it stood Beatrice in her white BMW, arms crossed, watching a crew prepare to pour. She had finally made her move. Rather than fight my gate through the county, she had decided to seal it permanently with concrete, welding my access shut and claiming the road as community property by brute force.
