Rebecca picked up the first page with fingers that had lost their confidence. It was a deed transfer, dated that afternoon, recorded that afternoon. She read the top line twice. “You put the house in a trust,” she said, her voice thinning. “An irrevocable one,” I confirmed. “As of this morning, I no longer personally own this property, and neither will anyone by marrying into or inheriting around me. The trust holds it. I’m the sole beneficiary for as long as I live, and I’ve named a corporate trustee, not either of you, to manage it after. You cannot borrow against it. You cannot pressure me into selling it. And you certainly cannot move a truck into it tomorrow.”<\/p>\n
Marcus stood up, his chair scraping. “You did this behind our backs.” “I did this in response to your backs,” I said calmly. “You sold your apartment without a single conversation with me. You scheduled movers. You announced to a table full of relatives that my guest room would become my room, in my own house, before you’d asked me one honest question. I didn’t act behind your back, Marcus. I acted after watching your plan arrive fully formed at my dinner table.” The relatives who had applauded moments earlier were now studying their dessert plates.
