“Here’s what happens now,” I said, standing so I could look at both of them evenly. “The master bedroom is mine again. Your things are boxed and labeled in the guest room, undamaged, because I am not a cruel woman, only a tired one who finally woke up. You have thirty days to find a place of your own. That’s more notice than kindness requires, but it’s the last gift this house is giving you for free.” Sabrina’s mouth opened. “Thirty days? We can’t afford our own place in thirty days.” “You both have full-time jobs and you’ve paid no rent, no utilities, no groceries, and no taxes for three years,” I said. “If you can’t afford a place after three years of living entirely free, that is not a housing problem. That is a choice you made with money that should have been going toward exactly this.”<\/p>\n
Caleb tried once more, and this time the softness cracked into something uglier. “You’re really going to throw out your own son over hurt feelings?” I looked at him for a long moment, this boy I had raised, this man who had looked away and drunk his beer while I was humiliated at my own dessert table. “No,” I said. “I’m asking my grown son to stand on his own two feet, which is the one thing a good mother is supposed to make sure her child can do. I failed at that for three years by making everything too easy. I’m correcting it now, while I still can.” Sabrina started to say something sharp about the house being “half theirs someday,” and I stopped her cold. “It was never going to be. I changed my will on the drive home from the motel this morning. Whatever you were counting on inheriting, count on something smaller.”<\/p>\n
They left the room to argue in the hallway, their voices rising and falling around the boxes I’d stacked in the little guest room where I’d spent three years being small. I did not follow. I picked my book back up, and I let them realize, on their own, that the woman they’d sorted into the background of her own life was not going to move back into the margins.<\/p>\n
They moved out in three weeks, faster than the thirty days I gave them, mostly because Sabrina couldn’t stand being in a house where she was suddenly the guest. The silence they left behind was the best thing I’d felt in years. I put Warren’s recliner back, the one Sabrina had gotten rid of, tracked down and repurchased from the consignment shop she’d sold it to. I rehung our family photographs. I turned the workout studio back into a garage. Caleb calls now and then; the calls are shorter and, strangely, more honest, because he can no longer end them by asking me for something.
