Loretta’s face had gone the color of the tablecloths. “This is a private family matter,” she managed. “Colonel, with respect, you don’t understand our history.” “I understand a citation,” he said. He reached into his jacket and unfolded a single printed page, holding it up so the front tables could see the Army letterhead. “This is Sergeant First Class Whitmore’s official record. Honorable service. Silver Star, awarded for actions in Mosul. Three deployments. Not one disciplinary mark.” He set it on the podium in front of her. “You’ve been telling this story for years. I only needed to tell the truth once.”<\/p>\n
I finally stood, and two hundred heads turned toward me, but I wasn’t looking at them. I was looking at Loretta. “You started rewriting me when I was twelve,” I said, and my voice did not shake, because I had learned long ago to keep it steady when a room turns cold. “You had my whole childhood and all sixteen years I was overseas. But you made one mistake, Loretta.
