She leaned toward me and dropped her voice to the sharp whisper she used when she wanted to scold without an audience hearing. “Mom, what are you doing? This is humiliating. Just pay and we’ll sort it out in the car.” “That’s what you said at brunch,” I answered, at full volume. “And the spa. And the wine shop. We never did sort it out, Melanie. Denise slowly lifted the cashmere wrap from her shoulders and set it back on the counter, her practiced warmth gone entirely. She had come to this shop believing she was watching her daughter-in-law’s mother happily bankroll an afternoon of luxury.
