Caleb did not raise his voice. That was what made the whole yard lean in. “Dad,” he said, “do you have any idea who this woman is?” Warren rolled his eyes and started to answer, but Caleb kept going, steady and quiet as a man defusing something. “Two years ago, my unit was pinned down in a valley with no comms and no way out. We were going to die there. Then somebody, three time zones away, flagged the movement we couldn’t see, rerouted a bird, and got us a corridor home.” He looked at me, then back at his father. “I spent a year trying to find out who made that call. Last spring I finally got a name attached to the intelligence product.” He nodded toward me. “Marisol Hollis.”<\/p>\n
The beer bottle lowered all the way to Warren’s side. Around the patio, thirty relatives went utterly still. “You’ve been telling everyone she’s a secretary,” Caleb said. “She’s the reason I walked out of that valley. She’s the reason I still have one leg instead of none. She’s the reason I’m standing in your backyard right now instead of being a name on a wall you’d visit once a year and brag about.” His voice finally cracked, just slightly. “And you made her carry a brisket around the side of the house like hired help.”<\/p>\n
