The courtroom doors opened. A man in a plain black suit walked in, unhurried, carrying nothing but a single sealed envelope. He was my grandfather’s private trustee, a man named Ellis Kwan, and only two people alive had known he existed. My grandfather was one. I was the other. He walked to the front, showed his credentials to the clerk, and turned to the judge. “Your Honor, I’m the appointed independent trustee of the Ashby Family Trust. I have one sentence to offer this court before it transfers anything.” The judge nodded slowly.
