“Those were never obligations of mine,” Marjorie interrupted gently. “They were gifts I chose to give, for years, without a single thank you, without a single invitation that didn’t come with conditions attached. Last night, you made it very clear I wasn’t welcome in your home. So I decided I wouldn’t fund it either.” Preston opened his mouth, then closed it, visibly searching for an argument that wouldn’t sound as hollow as it already felt.<\/p>\n
The bank manager quietly stepped back, giving them space, though the rest of the lobby had gone still, watching the scene unfold. Marjorie reached out and gently touched her son’s arm. “I love you, Preston. I always will.
