“You… you speak French,” Etienne stammered, switching back to English as though the language itself might undo what had just happened. “Fluently,” Vivian replied, still in French, watching him flinch at every word. “I lived in Lyon for seven years. I’ve understood everything you’ve said since you sat down on that deck. The comments about the lake house. About Americans confusing nature with culture. And especially the comments about my daughter.”<\/p>\n
Paige stared between her mother and the Beaumonts, stunned, piecing together the conversation she’d only partially understood in real time. “Mom, what did they say?” Vivian met her daughter’s eyes gently. “They called you simple. Unpolished. They questioned whether you had anything meaningful to offer their family’s legacy.” Paige’s face flushed, humiliation and anger crossing it in equal measure.<\/p>\n
Mathieu, visibly mortified, turned to his parents with a sharpness Vivian hadn’t yet seen from him. “You did this? At her own table, eating food she spent all day preparing?” Sabine tried to backpedal, insisting the words had been taken out of context, that cultural pride wasn’t the same as insult, but Vivian shook her head slowly. “I spent thirty years learning how to make myself smaller so people like you wouldn’t feel challenged. I’m too old now to pretend I didn’t hear exactly what you meant.”<\/p>\n
