The Blanket Was Folded Neatly, But What Waited Beneath The Doormat Stopped Her Cold

It was an envelope, thick and slightly damp at one corner, with my name written across the front in careful, old-fashioned handwriting. Inside was a folded letter and, tucked behind it, a check. My hands were shaking so badly I had to read the number three times before I trusted it. Fifty thousand dollars. I sat down right there on the wet porch step with the coffee going cold beside me, certain there had been some mistake. Men who sleep beneath trees in the rain do not leave fifty thousand dollars under a stranger’s doormat.

Then I unfolded the letter, and the first line undid me. “Dear Eleanor,” it began. “Last night you saw an old man and not a beggar, and you cannot know what that meant to me.” I pressed my hand to my mouth. He wrote that he had tested a great many people over the past year, and that almost no one had opened their door. He signed it with a name I did not recognize, followed by a single sentence that made my heart stop. “Come to the address below at noon, and bring your daughter. There is something you both need to hear.”
