The Blocked Road And The Satellite Phone My Son Forgot Could Bring The Whole County

Nathan’s confidence cracked the moment the deputy spoke. “It’s, it’s a family matter,” he stammered, the contract suddenly looking flimsy in his hand. “This is my father’s property. We’re just discussing a transfer.” The deputy glanced up at me on the porch, then back at the concrete truck parked sideways across my only road out. “Sir, blocking a private driveway so someone can’t leave their own home isn’t a family discussion. That’s unlawful restraint, and depending on what your father tells us, it could be a good deal more.” Walter, standing beside his pickup with his arms crossed and forty years of law enforcement in his posture, added quietly, “There’s a porch camera, Deputy. Recorded the whole thing. Raymond hasn’t touched the footage.”

I came down off the porch then, the satellite phone still in my jacket pocket, and I felt steadier than I had in the two years since Eleanor died. Nathan looked at me with an expression I had never seen on my own son’s face before, the look of a man who had been so certain of a plan that he never once considered it could fail. “Dad,” he said, lowering his voice, trying for warmth that arrived far too late, “you don’t want to do this. It’s me. It’s family.” I told the deputy everything, calmly and completely. The offer for half the land’s value. The blocked road. The words on the recording, that the truck would stay until I signed. And I told them the sentence Nathan had said with a smile, the one that removed my last hesitation. He had been counting on my grief to make me weak.
