The Other Mommy And The Secret Waiting Behind My Sister’s Trusting Front Door

The woman walking toward the kindergarten doors was our mother. My mother. Poppy’s grandmother. For a moment my mind simply refused to accept it, because it made no sense, and then, slowly, a far worse understanding began to take shape. She had been dead to us for nine years. Not literally, but in every way that mattered. She had walked out on our family when Vanessa and I were teenagers, vanished without a word, and never once reached out, not for graduations, not for weddings, not for the birth of her own granddaughter. Vanessa had grieved her like a death and then, finally, moved on. And here she was, collecting Poppy from school as though she had a right to, teaching my niece to call her Mommy.

I sat frozen in my car as she led Poppy to a sedan I did not recognize and drove away. I did not follow. I needed to think, and I needed the truth, and I knew exactly one person who had to be hiding it, because Vanessa clearly had no idea. Her husband, Marcus, was the one who arranged pick-ups when Vanessa worked late. Her husband was the one “picking Poppy up later” from the other mommy’s house. My sister believed her mother had abandoned us forever. But someone in that marriage had let her back in, secretly, and had been driving my niece to her house for dinner behind my sister’s back. That night, I made two calls. The first was to a private investigator. The second, finally, was to Vanessa.
